Fixing The Margin Issue With Floated Elements In Internet Explorer 6

I wish that I could remember the design blog where I initially found the fix to one of the many problems that I have run into designing for IE 6. It is a very simple fix to what has been a very annoying problem. I am sure that some other designers out there have run into this issue as well, so I figured I would write a quick post about how to fix it.

Basically when you design a website that uses floated elements, Internet Explorer 6 adds a significant amount of space to the margin of that floated element. In order to fix this issue, all that you need to do is add display:inline; to any floated element in your stylesheet.

UPDATE: Here is the blog that I found a while back to help me with this issue… http://www.jaymeblackmon.com/ie6-double-margin-bug-fix (Just wanted to make sure Jayme got credit).

If you are like me and you like to make your stylesheet as small in file size as possible, and you like to make sure that you did not repeat any styles accidentally, you might be interested in visiting Clean CSS. This website allows you to easily copy the text from the CSS file from your completed website and paste it into the “CSS Input:” window on the Clean CSS homepage, then you can select from a few different options on how you want your CSS optimized, etc. Then process it and within a matter of seconds your stylesheet is…CLEAN! It is a great resource for web designers and definitely worth checking out.

Ranking In The SERP’s For Denver Web Design

Now that I have my blog up and running, my next plan of attack is to try and rank well in Google (and the other search engines) for a competitive keyword in hopes of learning a few things and helping others who might be trying to do the same thing with their own keyword. I should make this clear, I am not an SEO expert by any means (I am actually very new to it), I have a basic knowledge about why a site might rank well, but have never been able to rank very well for any competitive keywords myself.

The keyword that I have chosen to try and rank for is going to be “denver web design” most of the time you probably wouldn’t want to let your visitors who could potentially be your competition know what keywords you are targeting, but I am really just hoping to learn a few things, and if I start to rank well for it, great, but if not…its not going to be a huge deal because I am also targeting some less competitive keywords that should be easier to rank for. The purpose of getting a good ranking in Google on various keywords, for this site, is to potentially get new clients.

Some of the factors that I have “heard” play into how Google ranks your site for a particular keyword are…

1. Backlinks - How many links from other sites point to your own site…obviously the more the better. Many other factors are involved in the particular weight a backlink holds…the main factor that I have heard is page rank.

2. Domain Age - A brand new domain will have a much harder time ranking for a keyword than an older domain that is trying to rank for that same keyword.

3. Fresh/Unique Content - Pretty self explanatory.

My plan now is to try and create content that people find valuable enough to link to from their own sites. I will also try to do some manual link building, but my hope is to make this site have enough fresh content that people really want to read because I think that is all that Google really wants.

I am sure that it will take quite some time before I see any real results, but I will occasionally be posting updates about my current ranking for the keyword “denver web design” and what I have learned through trial and error.

If you have any tips for me I would definitely love to hear them…please post in the comments, or contact me directly.

I have compiled a short little list of a few of the websites that I make sure I check out on a daily basis. All three of these sites have helped me in one way or another to become more valuable and/or productive as a web designer.

1. NetTuts.com - NetTuts is a great website for anyone from seasoned developers, to beginners who are just trying to wrap their head around a certain web technology. I actually credit NetTuts for teaching me to become an advanced Wordpress theme developer. Their are countless tutorials, many of which are video tutorials that tackle a large variety of topics. I get excited everyday to see what they are going to post next. Another thing I should mention, is that NetTuts is part of a family of tutorial websites that I also check out frequently, check out TutsPlus.com to see the whole family of sites.

2. Noupe.com - Noupe is a design related blog that has a ton of useful info. They have plenty of well done tutorials, useful resources and showcase items to inspire any designer. They also have some great links to quality downloadable icons/graphics. This is a great website to check out on a daily basis because it is frequently updated with some amazing content.

3. GoMediaZine.com - I really like to check in on what the GoMedia crew is up to on a regular basis. Their blog is great for helping to inspire and fuel creativity. They offer plenty of tutorials for creating amazing illustrations and graphics. One thing to mention is that they don’t update their website daily, however, they still make the cut for one of my favorite websites to check out daily because I check the site everyday just hoping that they have a new post to help make me a better designer.

If you are interested in developing your skills as a designer and/or developer I highly suggest you bookmark these sites and visit their sites frequently.
